Can samples be saved from a deceased person?
Yes, a swab sample can easily be obtained by a funeral home professional after a person is deceased and the DNA can be stored.

Why don't I just store my DNA at home?
You can store your sample at home using the FTA Elute card. You can also choose to store your sample at DNAPrint®. By storing your DNA swab samples at DNAPrint®, you have the ease of mind that your samples are stored safely and securely.  At home, you must have a safe fire-proof environment. The samples are small and can be easily lost or misplaced.  DNAPrint® has a storage area specifically set aside for storing DNA samples.

What if I want my sample back?
The DNA swab samples remain your property.  We are just renting you storage space.  At any time you can complete the Sample Back Request form and we will send the samples back to an authorized individual.

What about confidentiality?
You authorize who can access the samples by completing the Access Authorization form.  No other person would know your samples are stored, except any individuals you discuss this with.

Are my samples used for any testing?
The DNA swab samples remain your property.  The only testing that would be performed would be based upon the request from an individual whom you authorized on the Access Authorization form.  No testing would be done on your samples and your samples would not be used by anyone else except by authorization from an individual on the Access Authorization form.

Why should I store DNA from my parents or family?
Genetic testing and personalized medicine is rapidly advancing each year.  By storing DNA from a family member, especially your parents it allows genetic testing on their DNA which could help you with your medical decisions in the future.

Do I need to give you a blood sample?
No, we provide a mouth swab which is easy for you to use.  You gently rub the swab against the inside cheek lining to collect cells on the swab then let the swab dry and place in an envelope.  The process is very simple and easy.
